Where to start with the Adoption Council of Canada

How to Adopt

In Canada, adoption is mandated as a provincial/territorial responsibility. Prospective adoptive parents must therefore proceed according to the rules and regulations outlined by the province or territory where they live.

The Canada's Waiting Children program accepts referrals of children/youth from all provinces and territories. The service is intended to facilitate the placement of children/youth across provincial/territorial boundaries, as well as within individual provinces or territories. If an inter-provincial match is made, we will endeavour to help facilitate this placement.

Some provinces/territories do not participate in public photolisting programs. To accommodate those jurisdictions, you may occasionally see drawings or images, rather than photos, to represent a child or youth on this site, in addition to their profile. Some provinces/territories may also specify, when they refer a child, youth or sibling group, that those children/youth must be placed within their province or territory. If that is the case then we will specify that on the child, youth, or sibling group's profiles.
